Ways to Keep Fit Outside the Gym this Winter
When the days start to get shorter and the nights longer, many of us start to hibernate indoors and take up more sedentary activities like watching TV or surfing on our computers, phones and tablets.
Going to a gym can be a fantastic way to get fit, but many people find the experience painful and time-consuming, and can find themselves tied into a costly contract for something that they don’t use, or don’t even want to go near!
Here are some fun and unique ways to keep fit this winter without going to the gym.
Take the stairs
avoid the elevators and escalators and increase your cardio by taking the stairs. Everyone nowadays seems to be recording their steps, and this is a sure-fire way to increase yours.
Learn to dance
‘Strictly’ season is nearly upon us, so it’s time to dust off those patent shoes and join a dance class. Whether it’s ballroom, Latin or Lindy hop, a dance class can burn between 300 and 400 calories per hour.
Turn housework into a workout
When it’s time to clean the house, crank up those favourite disco tunes and turn a boring chore into a fun exercise.

Type ‘workout’ into YouTube and you get 32 million results! So, workout for free in front of your TV or computer screen, anything from high-impact aerobics to a Hatha yoga class.
Indoor team sports
A local search throws up a host of clubs looking for new members to play team sports. Try your hand at badminton, walking football or trampolining.
Hiking in nature
As winter sets in many of us hibernate rather than taking those long country walks. But remember that ‘There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing!’ So, there is no excuse not to enjoy the pleasures of hiking in the great outdoors.
Volunteer your way to fitness
There are some organisations such as Green Gym where the emphasis is on health and fitness as people volunteer for projects such as planting trees or clearing ponds. Or maybe you can jog your way to and from a good deed with GoodGym, by running regularly to see an isolated old person.
Invest in a home fitness gaming console
There’s more than one fitness gaming console on the market that you can connect with your TV. Challenge members of your household to a game of virtual tennis or boxing. Become a world champion snowboarder or have adventures like Indiana Jones. All are guaranteed to raise your heartrate.
Find your free outdoor gym
There are hundreds of local council-funded outdoor gyms that are free-to-use all year round, as councils hope it will encourage a healthier community. The gyms are mostly found in open recreation areas and parks, often near children’s playgrounds, so you can easily combine a workout in the fresh air with a walk or run in the park, or while your kids are playing.
Whatever your preference, winter doesn’t have to be a time spent watching endless TV boxsets!
